Best graduate schools to learn languages to become a translator?

I speak fluent French and Spanish and can survive in German (but a conversation isn’t pretty). I am currently a junior in college majoring in French and Spanish and my course of studies, as prescribed by the school, is mostly literature, which does not advance me much toward my goal of mastering a few other languages (German, Russian, and Japanese are the top three priorities).

What graduate schools focus on linguistics and the actual learning of languages in minute detail? Schools in the U.S., Canada, France, or Spain are preferred.

    If you can secure a position to attend the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA by enlisting as a reserve officer that would be your best bet. The coursework offered is 15 graduate credits in a Language and Cultural studies per 3 month period, along with full Linguistic testing and translator accredation when you complete the course. By signing up as a National Guard if you have an intelligence unit nearby, you may be free to pick your language as well as have a bare minimal service obligation. Its worth chatting with a recruiter to find out the details of what kind of contract can be worked out. You can attend the courses as a civilian, but the cost is prohibitively expensive.

    Middlebury College in Vermont is famous for its institute. My daughter attended a summer program where she learned German there. You live in a dormitory with people taking the language you are studying and you are not allowed to speak any language but the one you are studying. I think it was 9 weeks. Fortunately, my husband speaks German so he was able to call and talk to her.
