Im from Canada and dont have 2 years of foreign language. U.S. Universities generally say this?

ZoSo asked:

“must have…2-3 years of a foreign language. Please note that these are minimum requirements for consideration. Students most competitive for admission will exceed these minimums. International students should be completing a program of study that would qualify them for admission to selective universities in their own country.”

now in canada it is not required to take more than one highschool year of french (because we have learned it throughout elementary and junior school) even for the most selective universities. am i still eligible to apply for this particular university if i meet and exceed all other requirements.

What should I study in university to get a job in the U.S.A. or Canada?

Joop asked:

Hello everyone,

I live in Thailand and I wanna be a Hollywood Actor, Film director/Screenwriter. I’m not rich but I’ve talents, I don’t have enough money to spend for Acting or Film Making School in the U.S.A., where is the best and biggest Film Industry in the world.

It’s much more harder to have the dreams that don’t mesh with what my parents want. They won’t afford me for it so I’ve to try by myself. Why don’t I find a job? It’s impossible to get enough money from PT job in developing country. That’s why I’ve to apply for university.

Applying for Acting or Film in university here is a waste of time. Some said I’d better to try something else that give me more chances to find job in the U.S.A., then start my dreams.

Is it a good way? If it is, so what should I study in university that will give me more chances to work in the U.S.A. or Canada? I also have talented in writing and learning language. Should I apply for B.A. Russian? If you have any idea please let me know

Best graduate schools to learn languages to become a translator?

djcartwright asked:

I speak fluent French and Spanish and can survive in German (but a conversation isn’t pretty). I am currently a junior in college majoring in French and Spanish and my course of studies, as prescribed by the school, is mostly literature, which does not advance me much toward my goal of mastering a few other languages (German, Russian, and Japanese are the top three priorities).

What graduate schools focus on linguistics and the actual learning of languages in minute detail? Schools in the U.S., Canada, France, or Spain are preferred.

learning foreign language in the other foreign language ?

xiangshei asked:

Hi, I am Korean who go to school in Canada, who can speak Korean, English, Chinese
I have some problem these days..

I learned Chinese vocabularies in Korean,
so, when I want to speak “sky” in Chinese, I translate Korean word to Chinese(天;sky) which means, if i forget Korean word of ’sky’ , I can’t say sky in Chinese ( the reason that I can’t usually remember the ’sky’ word in Korean is I have been in Canada for a long time, i don’t say “sky” in Korean.. I say like ‘oh that’s sky’ in English..)
so I am trying to learn Chinese again using English(or in English?)
My English is second language, not first…
so.. do you think it’s possible learning Chinese in another foreign language?
(my first language is Korean)

Choosing a language to study?

Lila F asked:

Hi. I’m thinking of majoring in either english, philosophy, or psychology, and I need to start taking a second language.

I think I’d like to go to grad school eventually, and I’m trying to choose my language wisely. I live in Canada (where French is important), but one day I’d like to live in the States (where Spanish is important.)

But the thing is, I’d really like to study German. It’s not as usable as the other two languages, and I like the language (though it’s also not as culturally interesting to me ad the others.)

Given my interests and goals, what language do you think I should study? Or at least, how would you recommend I choose one?

Thanks

is it possible to “forget” how to speak a language?

Tsubasa asked:

i was born in Canada, but my first language was actually Cantonese Chinese. as a little kid, i was fluent because i didn’t speak english at all. but after i entered elementary school, my parents encouraged me to speak more english because that is the major language here in Canada.

now, i’m 18 and seem to have “forgotten” how to speak cantonese. i have no trouble understanding people who talk in cantonese though, and i can watch cantonese tv shows. my parents speak to me in cantonese only, but i reply in english. i can’t seem to speak it anymore. i have a weird accent and pause frequently, even though i was once fluent in this language.

is it possible to truly forget a language that you’ve learned? what can i do to start speaking cantonese again?

Is it true that?

JJJ asked:

Is it true that ….?
most people in the USA think they are living with the first rate quality of Life standard and people outside the US live with second rate??

American guy told me this. or he told me because he is too patriotic??

I am not asking you if you think this way, but people around you.

Another question. Why mexicans from Mexico I met in CAnada(language school) were so friendly and easy to get along with. But MExicans in the USA from Mexico and born in America are not friendly??

Also, is it true that people immigrated to the Usa at 5 yeas old tend to become racist toward people who are visiting, because they think them as rival?? is it true??

I am Japanese.
